Editorial Review

The Duplicator 5S Mini, a scaled-down version of Chinese manufacturer Wanhao’s Duplicator 5S, may be the runt of the Wanhao litter, but for an affordable plug-and-play desktop unit that works well with an impressive range of filaments, it’s a solid choice. Wanhao — once notorious for its unresponsiveness to customer feedback — responded to initial complaints about the unenclosed chassis and lack of heated print bed by adding an acrylic enclosure and glass heated build plate to subsequent shipments.

Wanhao excels at producing high-performance clones of better-known brands for a fraction of the cost. Judging from users’ high praise and forgiving attitude toward shortcomings like the single extruder and software issues, the 5S Mini is no exception. It’s hard to argue with results equal or superior to what you get from the biggest names in the business — ahem, Makerbot — at a price point that evokes a lot less sticker shock.

The 5S Mini shares with the Duplicator 5S features like a large Z-axis rod, superfast Bowden extruder, LCD menu panel, and Maker software. The Mini offers nearly identical functionality to the 5S in a more compact, lightweight package. So for those in its target market of “hard-core prototypers, architects, and engineers” with limited workspace, the Mini packs a wallop comparable to that of the clunkier Makerbot Z18 with less backbreaking heft.

In an ideal world, the 5S would also come in a Duo (dare we dream of a Trio?!) version for multi-extruder versatility, but who can complain about rummaging around in the 3D printing bargain bin and finding a little gem like the 5S Mini?

Apart from the price this is a piece of art. There are bit issues with resolution and the software "wanhao maker" beside heating bed not included.

It’s got a great print size of 295 x 195 x 205 mm and can print at 20 microns. The machine has a great build quality and the software provided works well.

One thing I would recommend is buying the heated bed from technology outlet to go with it if you want to print with ABS.

Excellent printer -- the best I've had. Fine detail and fast. Now a second head and heated print bed (ordered) to make it complete. Well done, Wanhao.
