Editorial Review

While the upright, electric vacuum cleaner was a marked improvement over the manual vacuum cleaners of the mid-1800s, they were still heavy and expensive enough to warrant further evolution. And as with so many things mechanical, they evolved humans right out of the equation. Robotics provided the autonomous robovacuum, especially the Roomba, one of the first, truly consumer-grade domestic robots to redefine our respective roles. While the robovacuum is more limited in its scope -- due to its small size and waste collector – after the initial investment, it saves the user money, some back pain and hassle, and a little mess. In short, it fulfills the robotic principle of making humans' lives easier and their manufacturers profitable.

For the wily consumer, there is no shortage of botvacs to choose from. The Vileda Cleaning Robot is one of 2 domestic bots -- the other being the Vileda Relax Robot -- from a European company that has been making household cleaning products like mops, window cleaners, brooms, and sponges for over 65 years. Not to be confused with the Relax robot, the red and black model of the Cleaning Robot resembles a giant lady bug/beetle, and has much in common with the arachnid-like Dirt Devil RoomMat BD70050RD. The Vileda Cleaning bot vacuums and sweeps dust and debris from hard floors and short pile carpet. It has counter-rotating brushes, a twin rotating brush bar, and edge/corner and side brushes for those tough-to-reach spots. Along with 3 programmable room settings, it has a bagless dust container that is removable and washable, obstacle detection, and drop sensors to avoid falling down the stairs.

The Vileda Cleaning Robot is no Vorwerk Kobold VR100 or Clean-Mate QQ5 Plus, both of which are high-end, high-tech domestic bots. It is relatively inexpensive, lacking both a charging station and product specs on the company website. Apparently, it runs on 14.4 volts and comes with a charger and a NiMH battery. Also included are an extra filter, an extra side/corner brush, and a maintenance brush. It can run 80 minutes on a full charge.

This is an amazing product, especially for the price. Vacuums under all my furniture. I have hard wood floors and short pile carpets which it handles easily.

Not great for large rooms and irregular, it is a bit noisy and the dirt tank a little'small, but does his duty.

It was going well but then stopped ... I left it and put it to charge again but it still wouldn't start, so sadly I had to return it. What a disappointment!

A big thank you to Vileda! My vacuum cleaner robot, I baptized him "Jim Bob", an incredible help in the household. Highly recommended!

Simply wonderful! Sufficient battery power for very large environments (about 45 min.). Great help to remove dust and dander, especially cats. It makes life easier.
