Editorial Review

As gamers will no doubt note, the virtual world is becoming more realistic with each recurrent upgrade. First person shooters, high-speed automotive hijinks and authentic looking flight simulators provide joystickers a sense of the exhilaration of extremely dangerous behaviors without all of the unpleasant consequences. Because such risky activities can be enjoyed virtually at a fraction of the cost of the legal fees and hospitalization their real life corollaries would incur, little joysticks motivating 2-dimensional activities have become second nature to many. With this firmly in mind, MAV manufacturers have come up with some 3 dimensional options well suited to such skill sets.

The hangars in Tinytown are filling up fast with all the little stunt-fliers jockeying for pole position. And present bragging rights go to the minis that can do that inverted thing. It’s pretty amazing to observe a machine of any size performing in defiance of normal operational expectations. But for what is effectively a cheap toy to be able to do it so shows how far and fast our technology has advanced. Tinies like the Blade Nano QX 3D and JJRC H22 can fly totally inverted, among their other skills.

Weighing in a little heavier but up to the challenge flies the UDI U27. The U27 is a smart little quad, kind of bobsled-like, with detachable rotor guards and LED running lights. It comes with user friendly instructions, which is always a treat from the non-English speaking manufacturer. The 4-channel remote is a stripped down affair with two sticks, a couple of end buttons and a small LCD window. It requires 4 AAA batteries in order to function. Considerably less fiscally invasive than the Blade Nano QX 3D, though more so than the JJRC H22, the U27 is durable and fun to fly. It flies as well inverted as it does upright although actual flight times of under 5 minutes diminish a little of its luster.

This thing is pretty awesome. Bought it for my nephew, and it has a lot of different features, and calibrations. Pretty cool, especially for the price. It hovers nicely.

First time we used it, it crashed into the floor and 2 pieces broke! Too fragile! Very disappointed!

Very fast, okay for indoor, but better out because of its speed & weight. Nice and stable for beginner, but not if you have never flown any quadcopter before. I like it!

U27 is very cool and fun quadcopter with amazing 3D "free loop" mode of flying. It has very good building quality, good materials and superb flight performance.
