Editorial Review

Bots are finding themselves in the oddest situations these days. Where once portrayed as impossibly intelligent, possessing super-human strength and a tendency toward world dominion, bots in the 21st century have taken on the role of the domestic. Our once posited masters are, as of now, still our slaves and are as likely to be cleaning our pools as mowing our lawns. Like they should be.

Indoor bots vacuum and mop and even do windows, like the Ecovacs Winbot W830. Most of the vacuums, and there are a lot of them, are similarly configured like autonomous bathroom scales, scooting about, weighing the cleanliness of the carpeting. A stand-out with a flat edge for cleaning those so difficult-to- reach corners is the Neato XV-21. Realizing the sense of flat edges for use around flat walls, the iRobot Braava 320 is a square little robo-mop.

Though it hasn’t rolled onto the flat-edge bandwagon, the iLife V5 has got some crossover potential as it vacuums and mops. The vacuum function is as expected with spinning whisky brushes flinging dust and debris into the waiting central suction hole and easily removable filth hopper. For flooring with less carpeting, attach the mop bracket. The large nanofiber mop cloth has a good sized surface area to maximize coverage over 150 square meters of pure cleaning goodness. The mop pads, for cleaning on linoleum, tile, hardwood and even glass, can be removed from the bracket and washed in the laundry. Noise rated at 55dB, it won’t drown out your sighs of relief at not having to vacuum. Edge sensors provide collision avoidance while drop avoidance sensors under the rim of the bot keep it from toppling off steps, tables and domestic cliffs. A 2600mAh battery keeps it working for 2 hours. When it is feeling a little weak, it returns to its charger base for a pick-me-up. After picking up for us, it seems only fair.

I think having the wet mop will prove a good advantage over the long haul to damp mop any dust that may have been left . . . it does a good job next to walls.

There’s also an array of sensors which ensure that the device doesn’t fall down, say from a tabletop, and damage itself.

Excellent communication and shipping. Lose one star because it's not good around my stairs. It makes it to the edge and then it shuts off and beeps.

Very easy to use. Instructions were a problem as they were only in Chinese, but I found an English manual on-line and problem was solved.
