Editorial Review

The Samsung Ezon SHS-3321 smart lock is a touch-screen PIN-code combination lock with a very clever anti-theft feature. Imagine for a moment that you're a burglar who's looking for fingerprints on the touch screen. Those fingerprints could tell you what buttons the homeowner has been pushing, right? if there's only a single user with a 4-digit PIN code, those fingerprints are at least going to give away the numbers in the code. Of course, that would leave 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 = 5,040 possible orders they can be pressed in, but this might be a very lucky burglar. If this is worrisome, you can set the lock so that you have to press two random numbers before entering your PIN to leave fingerprint-savvy burglars completely confused! Okay, the more we think about it the less useful this feature sounds (and you could just give yourself a 10-digit code that uses every digit on the pad, though that would probably be tough to memorize), but at least somebody at Samsung was keeping paranoid homeowners in mind.

Otherwise, the Ezon SHS-3321 is an attractive deadbolt lock that also opens with an RF card if you have trouble typing in (or remembering) PIN codes. (The SHS-3320 version also lets you use an old-fashioned key.) You can hand out up to 70 different codes so that everybody you trust to go through the door can have their own, though only one of these is the master code that gives you administrative control over the lock. This is especially useful if you're using the lock on the front door of an apartment building. Samsung claims that the deadbolt is adjustable to fit different types of door, but some users have complained that it required a bit of door modification to make the deadbolt work properly, so you might want to research door compatibility first.

For a different brand of touch-screen lock, look at the Yale Real Living YRL220. Or for a lock that will open when it senses your smartphone nearby, try the Kwikset Kevo, which also lets you use an extra-cost key fob like the one you use to get into your car.

A good stiff turn will close the bolt but the motor is not strong enough and thinks it is a problem.

Great keyless entry system. So far works very good.

We were able to get this lock working with a different door and we’ve been using this deadbolt to guard my workshop without incident for the past six months.
