Editorial Review

One of the first known thermostatic controllers was a biofeedback-manipulated device, which used a mercury thermostat for a chicken incubator and was invented around 1620. The traditional bi-metallic thermostat was made in the 1830s to maintain the temperature in textile mills. Eventually, someone decided to move these temperature regulators into the work and home environments, and life has been well regulated ever since. In 2009, ecobee created the first WiFi smart thermostat, which evolved into the Ecobee Ecobee3 2nd Generation. As these devices become increasingly popular, their evolution dictates that their manufacturers will keep making them smarter to communicate with all the other smart stuff swarming humanity.

For instance, the Heatmiser Smartstat uses Geo Location to adjust the home's temperature based on the user's whereabouts. This hard-wired unit can oversee up to 32 zones from a single spot. The Peq Smart is a beautifully designed thermostat that comes with 5 modes, a capacitive touchscreen, and the ability to automatically configure to a particular system. From SALUS Controls comes the iT500, an Internet-enabled programmable thermostat with clean, slender lines.

SALUS is a European company that designs and distributes energy control solutions. Their iT500 is wireless and is controlled via PC or smartphone. This extremely basic smart thermostat can be wall or surface mounted. It features touch controls on a backlighted LCD, 2 volt-free outputs, and a working frequency of 868 MHz or 30 meters. The temperature range is between 41 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Options are available for hot water control and 2-zone heating, the latter requiring a separately sold sensor. It also has built-in start-up programming for easy install. The iT500 comes with an RF receiver, an Internet portal, a charger, an ADSL cable, but not the 2 AA batteries.

Excellent product! I was looking for a thermostat which is adjustable via the Internet due to irregular attendance, and the salus is running good everyday exactly as expected.
