Editorial Review

The EPA says that the typical American family uses 320 gallons of water per day, about 30 percent of which is for the great outdoors. More than half of that water is used for lawns and gardens. Nationally, landscape irrigation accounts for nearly one-third of all residential water use, totaling approximately 9 billion gallons per day. This means that lawns are water wasters, especially when you consider that many people don't even use their lawns except as status symbols, like in desert climes such as Los Angeles. Compounding the wastage are leaky sprinklers and home owners who insist on watering their lawn every day during sunny hours.

Even if humans don't practice smart watering, smart sprinklers do. The GreenIQ Smart Garden Hub 6 Zone connects to irrigation valves or lighting circuits, and runs off of any web-enabled device. It calculates the best watering programs and automatically schedules irrigation, effectively cutting your outdoor water usage in half. The Rachio 8ZULW is the 8-zone model of the Rachio Smart Sprinkler Controller. It works with Nest, Alexa, IFTTT, Wink, Control4, Nexia, and others. You can run up to 16 zones directly from the controller or manually for local control. Starting, stopping, or changing your sprinklers is possible from phone or computer, and apps keep you apprised of water usage rates, rain delays, and faulty valves.

Each zone can be customized according to plant and soil types, nozzles, and sun exposure. Smart Cycle breaks up your schedule into smaller periods to maximize soil absorption and eliminate run-off. Rachio connects to thousands of weather stations for the latest weather and automatically waters accordingly while taking seasonal adjustments into account. It skips watering if rain or cold weather is forecasted. Best of all, it is EPA WaterSense Certified and SWAT tested. Install should take less than 30 minutes, and the unit connects directly to your Wi-Fi. A power supply with a 6-foot cord, mounting hardware, and a quick-start guide are included with this highly rated device.

I think this does really well and with IFTTT I can log and integrate other services into this including using my amazon echo to turn on the sprinklers.

I use the smart scheduler - it decides which zones to water, when, and how much. It decides based upon local weather stations very near your home.
