Editorial Review

When it comes to lawns, the most luscious of them are usually thirsty and often quite eco-unfriendly. Poor sprinkler placement or blockage can lead to a well-watered sidewalk or gutter as well as the displeasure of high water bills or neighbor derision. To ensure proper watering without waste requires the green thumb of a plant whisperer and the knowledge of a climatologist. Or at least a good gardener and/or smart irrigation system. For precision watering and attendant bill reduction, the GreenIQ Smart Garden Hub 6 Zone can halve outdoor watering costs using a proprietary Cloud-based app. In dry times, the system handles the watering but when it is wet, the watering is cloud-based.

The 1st Generation 8-Zone Smart Sprinkler from Rachio offers Android, iOS and laptop versions of their app to enable the user complete control over their lawn or garden from anywhere in the world. Rachio's app delivers the most accurate weather data from either national stations or personal weather stations which are based on local geography. The user can calibrate soil, vegetation, slope, sun exposure, and nozzle types. Adjustments for rain delays and scheduling can be fine-tuned gradually, or swiftly set and left to fend for themselves. If desired, the user can see when the system was last running and also view what's in store. The Rachio uses real-time reporting to show how much water is saved while tracking water use over time.

Like the GreenIQ Hub, the Rachio is ultimately about reducing water waste and utility expense. It should pay for itself in time, saving up to 30% on outdoor water use. This controller is an EPA Water Sense Certified product, which means that, depending on local municipalities, rebates may be offered. It can also be integrated with other home automation systems such as Nest, Alexa, and Nexia, so it is no wonder it is highly rated.

Easy to install and extremely flexible configuration. I just set it up so I can't speak to the water savings yet, but so far this product is exactly as advertised.
