Editorial Review

Air fryers are for that part of our brain that wants to eat unhealthy foods but not actually cause health problems. They're an ingenious solution to the conundrum of how to cook foods that are traditionally boiled in oil but without actually using any oil, a possibility that sounds almost oxymoronic. And yet, while your taste buds may vary on the result, they pull off the trick and now they've gone digital. Philips, the company that invented the air fryer, offers the Digital Airfryer, which not only has electronic controls but a rapid air system that forces hot air through your food at record speeds in a starfish-shaped pattern intended to distribute the heat evenly through every fry or chicken wing in the detachable pot. (You may occasionally need to add oil, but no more than a tablespoon full and you can make it the healthiest oil that Whole Foods has on its shelf, whatever that may be.)

Any food that you might normally fry can be placed in the Digital Airfryer, including (of course) french fries, chicken, fish, onion rings, pork chops and egg rolls, up to 1.8 pounds worth. The control panel lets you set the temperature, the start time and the stop time. Most of the parts are dishwasher-safe, so though there probably won't be much of a mess to clean up, you'll still be able to do it easily. The surfaces are supposedly non-stick, but reviewers indicate that a little cooking spray might be necessary in a few cases. Accessories are available so that you can grill, bake and roast with the unit too, making it close to an all-purpose food preparation system. The units come in black or white, but there may be a price difference between colors, depending on where you buy them.

For an alternative take on digital air fryers, look at the T-fal FZ7002 ActiFry. If you'd prefer to smoke your foods for a barbecued flavor, try the Masterbuilt Smart Digital Electric Smoker 20072115 or the Smoke Hollow D4015B Smoke-Tronix.

Because it cooks faster it is difficult to judge when some foods are cooked thoroughly since you can't go by the directions included in a recipe or on packaged foods.

This air fryer is great! You definitely need to experiment to find the right ways to use it but it definitely makes the whole frying process more efficient and less messy.

This makes great fries, chicken tenders, etc. You can even use frozen food. Makes your food very crunchy. Faster and easier to use than heating up the kitchen with the oven.

Product is smart in appearance but has an extremely small capacity. Certainly not large enough for use in a family of 3 or 4.

Anything that needs frying or broiling, I cook on the air fryer. One great help is that I no longer need to defrost my food before cooking; I cook sausages and bacon frozen.
