Editorial Review

Similar to the PetSafe 2 Meal, the PetSafe 5 Meal Pet Feeder serves your domestic animal buddies up to -- wait for it -- five meals. If nothing else, PetSafe's feeders offer numeric clarity. The 5 Meal consists of a five-tray carousel that rotates under a lid, exposing each meal through a hole shaped like a truncated pizza slice. How long these five meals will last depends on how you set the timers and what kind of appetite your pet has. If you have a single cat or dog, you might actually be able to leave town for a weekend while the 5-Meal doles out trays of kibble or wet food.

Amazingly, the price point isn't that much different from the 2-Meal. Clearly, PetSafe isn't charging by the meal. There's a tray underneath the unit to hold a small ice pack to keep the wet food fresh, but it's not guaranteed to keep wet food fresh for more than 48 hours max. At least the compartment lid shields the food from air that might cause it to harden or, in the case of dry food, go stale.

If you use the 5-Meal to prevent your pet from overeating, be warned that there's a possibility that Felix or Fido will figure out the trick of getting under the lid. The resulting banquet could be a diet buster. For a feeder that delivers larger amounts of food over longer periods of time, PetSafe has products larger than the 2-Meal and the 5-Meal. Or you could consider a competitor's food dispenser, like the Pet-Mate Cat Mate C3000, which claims it can hold 6 to 9 months worth of dry pellets.

I can fill it Sunday night and forget about feeding for the week. I love it, that's one less thing I have to try and remember. Very easy to clean too.

Does not lock into position when resting between timed feedings and is incredibly easy to rotate...animals very simply pushed the tray around, at will, with little force.

After an hour, our cats already figured out how to rotate the trays to access their food...the motor that rotates the tray seems to be very weak and can be turned easily.

If you have a cat who is too smart for his own good and loves food enough to make an effort to get it...this may leave you disappointed.
