Editorial Review

As we’ve been told, the world is divided between dog people and cat people. However, the common ground they share is an overall disinterest in or disgust with cleaning up pet waste. Maybe that's why many dog owners don't even bother and lots of cat owners opt for automatic litter boxes. In picking one, it's hard not to be overwhelmed by the sheer volume available, as much a sign of how much these things are in demand as the amount of feline fanciers. One of the most iconic brands is LitterMaid, and their LitterMaid LM980 is a typical example of these sorts of boxes, with the bonus of a carpeted ramp.

Pet Zone was founded in 1996 and acquired by OurPets ten years later. Subsequently, the Pet Zone brand has built a line of dog houses, wild bird feeders, toys, bowls, and waste management solutions, including the Smart Scoop. This automatic cat litter box has a modular design, making it easy to assemble and take apart for cleaning and maintenance. The metal rake goes into action 15 minutes after your cat has finished. Pricey waste collector trays and crystal cartridges are not needed since the Smart Scoop scoops waste directly into a bag instead of pushing it into a tray, which ensures that less clean litter is wasted. Ideal for multi-cat homes, this box is heartily constructed to include a motor with metal gears.

The Smart Scoop is compatible with any clumping litter or crystals, and it eliminates odors using something called carbon zeolite filtering technology. It includes 1 carbon filter and 4 touchless waste bags, a quality that seems rather redundant given that the bags have to be touched some time. This is no CatGenie 120 Self-Washing, and because some users claim that the rake often flings cat poo upward, it could benefit from a removable hood like what is found on the PetSafe Ultra Self-Cleaning Litter Box. Otherwise, this box appears to be of very average quality.

It doesn't scoop all the way to the bottom so I end up cleaning it anyway...more of a mess and time consuming than a regular litter box.

The motor has flaked and this has just become a piece of garbage...scoop doesn't reach all the way down so I had to clean the litter myself daily.

We've tried them all and this one is extremely effective. It has a large litter area. The rake is very heavy duty like the metal closet organizer shelves.

The rake bent and the plastic gear broke. Until the gear broke it worked great. Easy to clean and the cats loved it.

The receptacle is convenient...The mechanical wheel responsible for cleaning broke and I haven't even had the product for 3 months.

Does its job, but the rake has started getting caught on the plastic piece at the end and would often catapult clumps and poo onto the floor.

It has performed flawlessly...This one has not bogged down on me once even with a deeper litter load than the littermaid...Overall, I've loved this one.

This box is so much easier to maintain, with much less effort on my part . No box is 100% this one probably does 90% of the work for you.
