Editorial Review

As hard as it is to imagine, vast numbers of Earthlings have never enjoyed the myriad benefits of thermostatic control. The ability to regulate the temperature with precision serves livestock, poultry, and the people who farm and eat them. They help residents save money by consistently keeping them warm or cool. But not all thermostats are created equal. Smart thermostats connect to the Internet, so they can be controlled on Web-enabled devices from anywhere, whereas dumb thermostats can’t even use the phone. Although they are designed to reduce energy usage, according to some studies, energy consumption actually increases with these programmable thermostats. The primary reason is that the user either programs them incorrectly or unwittingly disables them outright. The smart thermostat is only as smart as its user.

A serviceable example is the Momit Smart, a home automation device that is designed to save you a bunch of dough. It lets you set up a monthly energy budget and it studies your power consumption habits in order to meet it. The Nuheat Home is a highly rated floor heating thermo controller praised for its ease of use. The Heatmiser Smartstat works with multiple users and adjusts the temperature according to their presence.

The PEQ Smart Thermostat comes from a home security systems provider. It has a sleek, black design, almost like that of the momit. The PEQ is controlled by capacitive touchscreens. It automatically configures to your particular system and is compatible with nearly all residential HVAC systems. There is a slider control for precise set-point changes and 5 modes -- Cool, Heat, Auto, Off, and Emergency. It controls electric and gas as well as up to 2 stages of heat and 2 stages of cool. It runs off of 24 VAC -- using common wire -- or 4 AA batteries. This device is proprietary and requires a PEQ hub and service plan, which is not included.
