The Oregon Scientific RAR502 is a budget-friendly weather station that offers a feature not often found at low price points, the ability to monitor the meteorological status of four different areas, or zones, on one display. You can monitor the yard, the garage, and the pool area at home, or multiple offices and meeting rooms at your workplace, getting separate readings from each. (The display itself, which also serves as a sensor, counts as one of these areas.) The unit isn't a full-featured weather station; all you're getting from the sensors are temperature and humidity readings. The weather forecast on the display is pulled off the Internet. But if you operated, say, three separate hothouses for growing plants, you could monitor the relevant data from them separately and watch it from the comfort of your control room (or home/workplace office.) The sensors can communicate with one another at distances up to 30 meters.
The RAR502 isn't one of your glossier-looking weather stations. The display is basic black and white LCD, but this is typical of Oregon Scientific's instruments, even at the higher end. If you want full-color, ready for primetime readouts, look at weather stations from AcuRite, like the 02077RM, or from La Crosse Technology, like the S88907. You don't go to Oregon Scientific for looks or style, but their weather stations are capable at what they do. For one that does a lot more (and costs a lot more), check out the Oregon Scientific WMR-89A, which comes with an outdoor sensor capable of measuring rainfall and wind in addition to temperature and humidity. It doesn't monitor multiple locations, but it's only designed to monitor two: inside your house and outside of it.
Oregon Scientific, which though based in a suburb of Portland is currently owned by a company in Hong Kong, opened for business in 1989 and also makes assorted tech products like MP3 players and digital cameras. Weather stations, however, seem to be their major focus. They also have several retail outlets, the three American ones all based on the West Coast. The rest are in Italy, China, Singapore and Hong Kong.
After a few days of testing the product, I've to say, I'm fully satisfied! I use it to monitor temperature and humidity of 4 different zones...
Easy installation, install the batteries and fast connectivity to devices. Good product that works great!
We really like the way all 4 temperatures and humidity are displayed. The bad part is the measurement ranges. Humidity does not go below 25%...
Clear and easy to read. Love the multi channel display. Set up was easy. Great!
Nice looking unit. Initially worked after battery installation. Three days later one sensor quit communicating. Not too happy but two stations still working.
Overall, very satisfied as they keep an eye on 4 different environments simultaneously; It was what I wanted. Perfect for my needs. Quality / satisfactory price. Recommended!
I was a little disappointed. I thought they were a little more precise sensors. It will be my idea but, compared with other thermometers, the values are always different.
