Editorial Review

The Nest Learning Thermostat, 3rd Generation, is the latest in the line of thermostats that revolutionized the way we control indoor temperature. It offers something that's unusual (if no longer unique) in a smart thermostat. It programs itself. As its name implies, it learns your schedule and adjusts your home's temperature accordingly. It can learn when you're not around and turn off the HVAC. And it can sense when you're near the thermostat and light up for readability.

So Nest Labs is clearly doing something right. The company was founded by a pair of Apple engineers in 2011, when it introduced the wildly popular Nest Learning Thermostat. How wildly popular was the Nest Learning Thermostat? Popular enough to spawn an entire line of thermostats. Popular enough to inspire the smart thermostat revolution. Popular enough to attract multiple lawsuits. When you reach the point where companies like Honeywell want to take you to court to prove that you're infringing on their intellectual property, you know you've arrived. The Nest Learning Thermostats are also popular enough that, in 2014, Nest Labs was acquired by the octopus-like (but never evil) mega-corporation Google.

The small, stylishly round display looks a bit like the staring eye of HAL9000, so you might not want to let it read your lips when you're talking about it. It can display the indoor temperature or show you an outdoor forecast. And, like almost every smart thermostat on the market, you can control it from a smartphone app.

Online user reviews of the Nest are remarkably enthusiastic, but if you want to see another thermostat that's trying to emulate the Nest Learning Thermostat's success, look at the Ecobee3 1st Generation. The Ecobee3 comes with multiple sensors that allow different heating and cooling patterns in different rooms, while the Nest comes with only one. If you want the Nest learning thermostat to branch out to other rooms, you have to buy more thermostats.

The nest learning thermostat is no longer the revolutionary product as it was in 2011... but nest still wins in terms of overall design, usability, features and performance.
