Editorial Review

The Nest 2nd Generation Learning Thermostat is, as the name suggests, the second generation of the original Nest Learning Thermostat, a device that pretty much introduced the concept of the smart thermostat with its ability to observe your behavior, figure out when you'll be home, and adjust its temperature schedule automatically, with no intervention from the user required. The original Nest was such a hit with consumers that it not only spawned a product category but imitators by the dozens, all claiming that their thermostats can not only do what the Nest 1st generation model could do but can do it better.

Meanwhile, Nest hasn't been sleeping. While its competitors have been hard at work, Nest (now a division of Google) has put its signature model through multiple iterations, of which this is just the second. So the real question about the Nest 2nd Generation Learning Thermostat isn't so much whether it's an improvement over the first generation but whether its successor, the Nest 3rd Generation Learning Thermostat, is sufficiently better to justify its extra cost compared to a new or even used second generation model. If you're in the market for a premium brand smart thermostat, this may be your chance to pick up a bargain.

So let's look forward and see what the third generation has that this doesn't: It's slimmer. It has a slightly larger, higher-resolution display with a special mode that shows the temperature in humongous digits that you can read from across the room. And it can...well, those are just about the only ways in which the third generation Nest is superior to the second generation.

If you want those new features, do some price comparing, but there's a good chance you'll decide that the second generation Nest is the bargain that you're looking for -- especially if you can find it used.

Installation was also a breeze taking only 10 minutes and I'm no electrician. Do yourself a favor and get one. 10/10 would buy again.

Easy install. Easy to use. After a week it lit up and told me it had learned enough about my schedule to program itself...

The nest seems to be the sleekest looking, best functioning of all. Easy to install, even comes with the necessary tools and hardware.

The second-generation nest is 20 percent slimmer than the first. More importantly, the bezel is a single, elegant piece of metal.
