Editorial Review

Like most automated pool cleaners, the Maytronics Dolphin Premier is essentially a mobile water filter with brushes to stir up crud from the walls and floor of your pool to add it to the input stream. The life of a mobile water filter isn't easy. First it has to find a way around your pool, which the Dolphin Premier does with SmartNav pool surface scanning that lets it map out the shape of your pool and figure out how it can get around most efficiently. While it moves it uses a 360-degree anti-tangle swivel, a feature found on many pool cleaning robots that prevents it from becoming snarled in its own cable.

The Premier comes with four different filters depending on what you want to remove from the pool, including a micro-filter to catch tiny particulate matter like algae particles, and an oversized debris bag, for pools that are filling up with leaves and other large pieces of natural (or unnatural) litter. The HyperGrip dual tracks, which look like tractor treads with teeth, result in what Maytronics claims is 40 percent less slippage while climbing pool walls, though they don't specify what it's 40 percent less than. The unit runs on DC motors, which Maytronics says is 90 percent more energy efficient than running on AC motors, for a net cost of five cents an hour in electricity.

The unit gives your pool a thorough scrubbing, handling steps and going all the way up to the waterline. When the Dolphin Premier is finished with the job it will float to the top of the water, though you may have to wade in to retrieve it or pull it in by its cable, because there's no way to tell it to come to the water's edge. For an extra cost you can get a caddy to go with the unit, so you don't have to lift all 40 pounds of it plus cable to put it back in whatever nook you shelter it in. (Leaving it out in the elements, especially direct sunlight, isn't advised.)

For competing products, look at the Aquabot Turbo T-Jet, the Polaris 9450 Sport and the Pentair Kreepy Krauly Prowler 830.

Easy to use. Not especially heavy compared to other units. Even gets the mold and algae! Super easy to clean filters. Would definitely recommend.

This is an excellent auto pool cleaner. It is just a matter of dropping it in the pool and turning the power source on. Easy to clean and easy to operate.

My pool was dark brown with a pile of leaves and mud. I dropped the robot in it and now my pool is crystal clear.

It is a good cleaner, and almost identical to the Pentair 830.
