The Litter-Robot III Open Air Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Box does exactly what you would do while cleaning your cat's litter box. It uses a scoop to sift the litter and dumps the detritus into a container. If you've used the Litter-Robot Open Air before, the company would like you to know that this is a major update. They've listened to your feedback and made it better, suggesting that it may be safe for skeptical former users to come back into the fold.
The Litter-Robot III is surprisingly old school for an automated litter box. It doesn't use absorbent crystals like the PetSafe ScoopFree Original Self-Cleaning litter box or scrub your litter with detergent like the CatGenie Self Cleaning Automated litter box. It does exactly what you would do while cleaning your cat's litter box. It just...scoops.
Like other mechanical litter boxes, the Open Air detects the presence (and absence) of your cat and waits a programmable number of minutes before it goes to work. This not only assures that the litter can clump first but also that your cat doesn't get scooped and dropped into the carbon-filtered drawer. The unit, which looks a little like a space capsule, is largely enclosed, with a portal to let the cat in and out. The interior has a night light, for cats whose night vision may be failing, and the Open Air can be programmed to stop working at night, so it won't disturb the sleep of any humans.
There's a backup battery so litter won't go uncleaned during a power failure. While there are complaints that the rubber around the entrance can come unattached, most users seem happy with the Open Air. That would be the human users, not the cats, but if the cats didn't like it, the humans probably wouldn't either.
It works amazing and my cats love it. They literally go potty and then sit and wait to watch it do the cleaning cycle! I was able to go from 2 litter boxes to just this one.
This is a really nice product made well and so far so good it is functioning well. Its nice that I don't have to clean it every day and the smell is down.
I hesitated to buy the litter Robot because of the price, but now that I have it I could never go back to scooping litter again. Works great.
The night lights is pretty cool and the robot has plenty of indicators that lets you know what is going on with it. Battery backup is nice too.
