In 1643, Evangelista Torricelli placed a glass tube into a tub of mercury and discovered that the height to which the mercury rose inside the tube (which otherwise contained only vacuum) served as a means of weighing the earth's atmosphere. Torricelli had invented the barometer.
The weight of the earth's atmosphere is usually referred to as air pressure and though Torricelli may not have realized it, his invention was the most reliable method of predicting the weather that anyone had yet invented. No weather station for professionals or hobbyists can claim to be able to predict the weather without having a barometer in it, as the La Crosse Technology WS-9057U-IT-LC does.
How a barometer is able to predict weather is complicated, but the back-of-your-hand notes that you take with you to your Meteorology 101 final would read something like this: Cold air masses have higher air pressure than warm air masses. A warm air mass can lift itself over a cold air mass. When the warm air is lifted, moisture in the air condenses, clouds form and precipitation can happen. Okay, that may be too much for the back of one hand, but the takeaway is that when the air pressure drops, warm air is on its way and is carrying clouds with it.
The barometer on the WS-9057U-IT-LC's LCD display will show you the air pressure, whether it's rising or falling, and a picture of sun and/or clouds to remind you what kind of weather is being predicted. The unit, which includes a wireless outdoor sensor, also displays the temperature, humidity, time, moon phase and 24-hour barometer history. This is probably all that the armchair meteorologist needs to know, but serious weather hobbyists who want to spend more to get additional information like wind direction might want to go all in and look at expensive units like the AcuRite 01085RM or the Davis Instruments Vantage Vue.
I set the unit up. It works very well. This one has worked from the get go. Would highly recommend it for someone who wants temperature and humidity information.
They are incredibly difficult to set and don't last! Very disappointed with this product and will not purchase this brand again.
It has more features, is easier to read, costs significantly less than the old one; and with the wood frame, it fits perfectly with the decor of our kitchen. Very pleased...
Came scratched. Not happy and will most likely return. I did not try and set it up yet, so unsure of how it works.
It works beautifully and also a wonderful forecaster for my Sinus Condition. Best machine for the price. Fantastic weather station!
The station was smaller than I had expected. I have not been able to get the remote station to communicate with the base station.
The instructions were a little confusing as to setting the numerical day with the actual lettered day, but I did get it to go. I am happy with it! Good product!
We are very happy with the station. It was easy to set up and easy to change anything that needs it. It was a good item for the price and we would recommend it to anyone...
A very effective weather station - it provides helpful data and is very accurate. Screen is a little hard to see in some light. Solid weather station!
This small clock is very powerful with all its weather information, and has become a great conversation piece and learning tool for the family.
