Editorial Review

La Crosse Technology has almost as many different yet similar weather stations on the market as their competitor AcuRite does. Well, at least they come within an order of magnitude. Having as many different unit as the ultra-prolific AcuRite would be difficult, if not physically impossible. The La Crosse Technology C87214 is a colorful and capable unit, but it's very similar to La Crosse's own 327-1414W and 308-1412S, as well as AcuRite's 02027A1. The price is good, though, and it follows the standard formula that has worked well for both La Crosse and Acurite: a colorful, information-packed indoor display combined with an outdoor display that transmits weather information wirelessly.

You can tick off all the usual suspects for the indoor display: A brightly colored sun, clouds and/or rain icon for the weather forecast; the outdoor and indoor temperature and humidity; the barometric pressure (which is used to calculate the forecast); trend arrows to indicate whether those stats are rising or falling; the date and time with automatic adjustment for Daylight Savings Time; customizable temperature and humidity alerts; a signal strength icon, so you'll know if the outdoor sensor is within range and not being blocked by a solid object; records of the minimum and maximum temperature and humidity; and an alarm setting for reminders or to wake you up if you fall asleep at your desk.

The outdoor sensor can read temperatures over a range of -40°F to +140°F, which should cover most locations in the continental U.S. It can also read the relative humidity in the range 10% to 99%. It can broadcast this information as far as 300 feet to the indoor display, barring any electromagnetic barriers in the way.

If you're shopping for a weather station, you should take a look at this unit, but also at the others listed above. And as long as you're using a search engine, also check out the Irritrol Climate Logic CL-100 Wireless, the Oregon Scientific WMR-89A and the Ambient Weather WS-0900-IP.

Temperature doesn't register the same temperature as what the weather channel shows. Not near bright enough. Good but not great!
