If you want to use the smartphone-based remote control capabilities of the Kwikset Premis, you'd better own an Apple TV, because this lock only works with the Apple Homekit controller that's built into the Cupertino, California, tech giant's TV box (third generation model or later). If you're one of those people, though, this device may come as a blessing, because the majority of remote-controlled locks right now work with Z-Wave-compatible whole-home controllers and only a few, like the Schlage Sense BE479, work with Homekit. If you're set up to use it, the Premis will let you program in up to 30 individual PIN codes for users to tap in on its touchscreen combination pad and you can even ask Siri to unlock it for you. (Do we need to mention that the Premis doesn't work with Android phones?)
Paranoid homeowners will be relieved to know that they can use their iPhones to make sure they locked the front door. And the Premis app compiles a record of what codes have been used and when, so you'll know who's been entering your house or apartment and the exact time they entered. (If your kids are sneaking home when they should be at school, you'll be able to catch them in the act. And if you gave out a PIN code to an untrustworthy relative or housekeeper, they'd better not be stealing anything from the cookie jar.) You can't use the app to unlock the door from the office, but it can connect to the lock via Bluetooth so that you don't have to stop whatever you're doing to let in visitors.
The Premis is pretty burglar proof. It's BHMA/ANSI Grade 2 Certified and the app will alert you if somebody enters an invalid PIN code three times in a row. If you'd like a similar lock that works with Z-Wave rather than Homekit, check out the Schlage Connect FBE469NX. And if you'd prefer something easier to use, look at the Kwikset Kevo or the August ASL-02, either of which will unlock automatically when they sense your smartphone in your pocket.
Absolutely wonderful product. Very simple to install, it's a little bit more involved than your typical deadbolt but very simple to figure out.
Great lock! If you have Apple TV you can control the lock from anywhere in the world. I've owned several Kwikset touchpad deadbolt locks and have been very happy with them.
The Kwikset Premis works well and gets user management absolutely right, making it a solid choice for anyone with an interest in Apple HomeKit.
