Editorial Review

Contrary to the impression of sleek marketing campaigns that glamorize the making and drinking of coffee in all its forms, the truth is that for a certain kind of coffee drinker, that cup of joe isn’t so much a matter of prestige as it is an urgent necessity. Fully automatic coffee makers like the Jura Impressa XS90 cater to such religious consumers of the roasted bean, for whom that regular cuppa is the very elixir of life. Deprived of it, they’re relegated to the proverbial island of lost souls, wandering aimlessly in search of a wayward train of thought.

Whether you count yourself among this sorry lot, or have one in your life, you know all too well the value of a reliable delivery system that can be counted upon to dispense caffeinated magic-in-a-cup at the touch of a button. The Swiss household appliance maker that calls itself “a pioneer in the field of automatic espresso/coffee machines” has been serving up such liquid vitality since the late 20th century, and Impressa’s been on the job for a decade or so. Drawing on that considerable wealth of experience, the XS90 features dual heating systems, a 218-psi pump, burr grinder and dispenser with continuous fill level monitoring, and one-touch performance to expertly execute the perfect pour for one or two cups of espresso, cappuccino, latte or other brew of choice.

Naturally, the Impressa’s expert assistance doesn’t come cheap, and not everyone’s budget can bear the strain of a top-of-the-line Swiss or Italian espresso maker. If the sticker shock makes your mouth go dry, you could get a DeLonghi Lattissima Pro for a good bit less. But if you’ve got your heart set on becoming your own professional barista – and you’ve got the wherewithal – you might as well go all out on the Jura Giga 5.

It has more options than I can really keep up with, but very simple and easy at the same time; truly a one-touch latte/cappuccino of excellent quality!

The milk does not heat up enough, so that part is rather frustrating. Programming is not very intuitive.

Use it everyday at my office. In two weeks we went through a water filter and the coffee is amazing! Everyone loves it!

Aside from making an excellent coffee and espresso, the greatest attribute is the frother which draws cold milk and aerates it to a remarkably smooth creamy consistency.

One morning Jura Xs90 made first latte just fine and then would not make any more of anything. It is stuck in "Heating up" mode. So disappointed...

I love this machine! It is so easy to use and the ability to make froth by placing it in a milk container is wonderful.
