Editorial Review

For better or worse, robots are here to stay. They've been involved in the manufacturing, agriculture, and scientific realms for decades, so it was only a matter of time before they entered the domestic sphere. Robotic floor cleaners is the generic term for any floorbot that vacuums, sweeps, or mops, and there are also some that do a combination of these tasks. For example, the Lilin K6L is a flashy vacuum that does light mopping. The square iRobot Braava 320, however, only mops whereas the terrifyingly effective Dyson 360 Eye just vacuums, though it might moonlight as a security bot, making sure the other floorbots do their jobs.

The Jisiwei S+ is an example of a bot that, while specializing in vacuuming and sweeping, is also set up for dry mopping, surveillance, and child/pet monitoring. It's the first robovac with a built-in camera and WiFi, which allows for remote control anywhere on the globe via smartphone or tablet. You can take pictures and save them onto iCloud. S+ features a dual-mode anti-scratching system, cliff detection, a 500-mL dustbin, 7 cleaning paths, and autodocking and recharging. It automatically adapts to all floor types including carpet, tile, hardwood, and laminate. There is a voice prompt for functions such as recharging and cleaning, and an LCD to show the time, Wi-Fi signal, and cleaning mode.

This Kickstarted vacuum/camera runs at less than 45 decibels, making it fairly quiet. It can sweep 200-square meters and climb 15-degree angles for people with steep floors. Its 2600mAh lithium battery is good for 2 hours per charge. Included are the charging base, remote controller, adapter, 2 filters, 2 side brushes, 1 cleaning brush, 1 mop cloth, and 1 English language user manual. There is no question as to the technical acumen of the S+. However, one issue is the product video on YouTube, which refers to the S+ as a she, arguably perpetuating the quaint notion that floor cleaning is the female's purview. Then there's the matter of why a robovac should have a camera and Web-enabled remote control in the first place. Brave, clean new world, indeed.

I’m pleased with the cleaning performance of this vacuum but it has much room for improvement in a couple key areas.

It will never replace either your main vacuum cleaner or your security camera, but it certainly takes the pain out of cleaning the whole house...

Good item but because of little power, it is not useful. The connection with Wifi doesn't work properly. The manual is complicated.

I love the way that it follows round the underside of pieces of furniture... A brilliant device, which can make bits of your life easier.
