Editorial Review

Not all weather is created equal. Nor does all rain fall in the same quantity on different days. Unless you want to work your sprinkler system by hand -- which you probably don't if you're reading this site -- the day of the one-watering-schedule-fits-all sprinkler system is dead. If you live through the rain-soaked summers of Louisiana, you may not need a sprinkler system at all. If you live in the drought-parched urban deserts of Southern California, you may need to prevent your garden from sucking up the water supply until only a trickle is left for your neighbors.

The Irritrol Rain Dial R-Series is all about rain. At least that's what it says in the name. And it does, in fact, have a rain sensor hook-up so that you won'waste valuable aqua pura when it's already falling from the sky. Its optional Climate Logic Wireless Weather Sensing System is weather savvy enough to know that hot days require more watering than cold days -- evaporation and all that -- and it can be scheduled to water on those days, such as odd and even dates, that are mandated for local water conservation.

The Irritrol comes in 6, 9 and 12 station models. While the stations are designed to run off tap water, booster bumps can be added to carry larger loads over longer distances. Unlike a lot of smart irrigation controllers, the Irritrol doesn't come with a remote, but it's designed to operate with the Contractor Residential Remote remote series. Vegetation is no more equal than weather, so three built-in programs can be set to meet different agricultural needs.

Depending on your yard, farm, garden or climate, the Irritrol may not be what you're looking for. Alternatives in a similar price range include the Blossom 12 Zone Controller and the Rainmachine Touch HD-16.

The unit is simple to configure and use and the manual is easy to understand, even if you have never seen this kind of unit before.

It works as I expected...It is somewhat complicated to program and I seem to take several tries to get what I want. Once programmed it works well.

I could not be more pleased. Easy to program, easy to adjust, can't imagine why anyone would buy another brand.

Super easy to program. Like the fact that the timer box has a lock and requires a key to open to prevent tampering.
