Editorial Review

Picking out a robotic vacuum cleaner is like playing Where's Waldo? You know the guy is in there somewhere, but he's part of such a large crowd and so many of them look alike that it can take a lot of time, research and attention to find the one you want.

A lot of companies are currently producing robovacs: iRobot, Neato, Bissell, bObsweep, Infinuvo, Samsung and others. And many of those companies produce multiple lines of automated vacuums and several models within each of those lines. Just trying to determine how these products differ from one another can be a daunting task and then you have to consider what features you want to buy and what price you're willing to pay for them. Worse, the ground is constantly shifting, as manufacturers bring out new, more powerful models and discontinue older ones.

Consider, for instance, the Roomba 790 from iRobot. When it was released in 2013, it was one of the top-of-the-line automated vacuum cleaners from any company on the market and was expensive. It's still not a bargain-priced model, but iRobot has brought out even more sophisticated (and expensive) Roomba models. For instance, the 790 still relied on a largely random algorithm for finding its way around the floor of your house while more recent models, like the much higher-end Roomba 980 or Neato's Botvac Connected, have sophisticated mapping sensors for more efficient cleaning, not to mention Wi-Fi connections so that they can be controlled by smartphone apps.

The Roomba 790, however, is also one of iRobot's allergy-friendly models, which minimize the amount of dust and pet fur that you'll be breathing while it works. The expensive models have this feature too, but if this is a more important consideration for you than having the room cleaned quickly, the Roomba 790 could save you quite a bit of money over higher-end machines.

It works as advertised but the dust bin barely holds one cup. So when it does one carpet area it fills up in minutes.

I absolutely love this product. It is now four years old...and is looking tired ... but still amazes me daily how much dirt, hair, bits and bobs that it manages to pick up.
