Editorial Review

The business of new technology is riddled with blowhards and copycats, trumpeting over-promisers, old goliaths envious of David's new toys, and many other varieties of wannabes, whom the legendary Steve Jobs charmingly termed "bozos". It's an exciting game largely played by young folks whose fire in their eye can all too often obscure their foresight and older folks who really ought to know better but crave to feel young and relevant in our youth-exalting culture -- and the rare genius who knows what they're doing.

Having run an eminent tech corporation for over a century, thermostat giant Honeywell can proudly count themselves as an old Goliath enviously peering at David's new duds -- to make the metaphor plain, their smart thermos bear more than a passing resemblance to market leader Nest's top-notch products.

Emulating the Nest's sleek, minimalist design, (or is it vice-versa? Honeywell invented the round thermostat, after all) the Honeywell 2nd Generation does differ from their primary competitor in some important ways. While Nest's stellar machine learning algorithm is its main competitive edge, the Lyric uses a technology known as "geofencing," using multiple sensors to detect when you are close to home. The first method of cost reduction and energy savings relies on occupants with a regular schedule and consistent set of preferences, while the Lyric's approach may better serve those who find themselves keeping odd hours with regularity.

Additionally, Honeywell has displayed the business acumen that has made them the premier name in thermostats for generations by making their Lyric product compatible with the Apple Home Kit -- placing them in even more direct opposition with the Google owned Nest. Whether that is enough to upset the true innovator in smart thermostats will only be revealed via the passage of time.

It caused the air conditioner/heater fan to cycle on and off and the temperature could not be changed. I couldn't stop the cycling until I disconnected the wires to the Lyric.
