Editorial Review

Homedics has at least three different aromatherapy devices in their Ellia line, of which the Gather is one of the more upscale. Though made mostly from ceramics, it's designed to look like a woven basket, spouting its aromatic fumes in a rising plume from a hole in the center of its wooden lid. It comes with three different essential oils: Orange, Fight It and Pay Attention. (Pay Attention is presumably designed to enhance focus, but we leave it to your imagine to figure out what Fight It is intended for. Resisting temptation, perhaps?) Shifting colors of light emanate from the basket while the Gather plays soft sounds that you can change to match your mood -- or to match the mood that the oil is intended to enhance.

Unlike some other automated oil diffusers, the Gather doesn't function as a humidifier, so all you need to do is pour in five to seven drops of oil and push the On button. It will operate for ten hours when you have it set for continuous release and for twenty hours when you set it for intermittent release, then turn itself off to avoid using unnecessary electricity or burning out its parts. You can buy additional essential oils from Ellia or from any other company that sells essential oils, so you're not just stuck with the three that come in the box. Amazon even sells a sampler set of Ellia oils that includes Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Grapefruit, Rosemary, Lemongrass, Orange and Peppermint. (There's no mention of why Fight It and Pay Attention have been excluded. They sound a lot more interesting.)

The Gather is seven inches wide, so it should fit well on tables and bed stands, but not so well on kitchen sinks and toilet tops, if you were planning on a relaxing, aromatic bubble bath (or just to deodorize your bathroom). That's still small by aromatherapy device standards. For others, some of which are larger, look at the Miro CleanPot, which is so simple in construction that most of it can be washed in the dishwasher; the joyfully named Smiley Daisy Gardenia; and the appetizing-sound Serene House Scentilizer Donut, which (alas) does not come with essential donut oil.

The oil diffusing options, sounds playlist, and lighting make this diffuser better than any other I have tried. It looks so cute in the house too!

The music in it is annoying, it requires refill every day. Maybe get one for a massage therapy room.

This item couldn't be easier to use. A simple press of the buttons and you can start mist, lighting, music. Touch the music button again, and a different sound will play.

This is the best all in one relaxation diffuser. It has about eight different sounds to choose from, the mist last up to 20 hours, and the lights change to various colors.

This is the best all in one relaxation diffuser. You will sleep much faster and rest much easier. My remote sometimes doesn't work the way it should.
