Editorial Review

Hive is the British equivalent of Nest Labs, the category-defining American company that began marketing the Nest Learning Thermostat in 2011. Even their names are similar, Hive and Nest, both four-letter words meaning "home" (though not necessarily the human kind). Both companies are gradually rolling out full home automation systems. Nest not only offers wirelessly controlled thermostats, but smoke detectors (Nest Protect) and security cams (Nest Cam), while Hive sells motion sensors, window and door alarms, and remote controlled electric outlets (Hive Active Plugs) that let you turn appliances off and on from your smartphone.

Hive's heating and cooling solution is called Active Heating. Like all smart thermostats, the Active Heating system controls your home HVAC system, though in the case of the Hive it also controls your hot water, assuming you haven't switched over to a tankless system. The wall unit for the Hive Active Heating 2 is a stylish square panel not unlike the simple round wall unit for the Nest. Apparently Hive has only recently realized that a stylish wall unit might be a selling point; reviewers note that the first Hive thermostat was a relatively unattractive addition to your hallway. (At least one reviewer calls it "ugly.") At any rate, with or without an attractive wall unit, most of the temperature setting is likely to be done from Hive's smartphone app.

The Hive Active Heating system is a product of British Gas, a UK utility company. British Gas also makes their smart home systems available in the United States, extending their competition with Nest to both sides of the Atlantic. Installation is free, at least in the United Kingdom. If you're interested in buying one and need it installed somewhere other than the UK, you might want to check with Hive to see if the offer covers your location.
