Editorial Review

When considering the efficacy of a product, it is wise to compare it to other products of similar nature and functionality. Little is more distressing than finding that your neighbor got a better version of the same product, cheaper. Especially owing to the likelihood that he’ll remind you every chance he gets by using it in your presence. Often, though, a product will exist in such abundance that making a side by side comparison is next to impossible, a sure road to the spur-of-the-moment impulse choice. The quad market in particular illustrates this surfeit conundrum with the constant upgrading of knock-offs of knock-offs.

The DJI Phantom and its wide line of other Phantoms made every quad aspire to aerial photography. So with a nip and tuck here and there in their clone factory, toy maker Syma launched their ever-so-popular Syma X5C Explorers. But the X5C, while affordable enough to bring the camera quad experience to the non-professional consumer, still had some function issues which led to its further incarnations. One of those further incarnations happens to come from competitor, Gptoys.

The Gptoys F2C Aviax is their improvement on the Syma X5C's deficiencies, the hope that their take on Syma’s take on the Phantom will take off for them. It has a couple of features that the X5C lacks including headless mode, which is becoming as ubiquitous as the 6-axis gimbal. Headless mode on the F2C can be used as a return-to-home function, which definitely kicks another one to Gptoys. It also has auto-pilot/cruise-control which will keep it close by. The F2C remote is a cheap hobby-grade controller with a built-in LCD for flight data and systems status. The marginal video is courtesy of a 1080x720p HD camera with a 4-GB micro SD card which shoots still photos at 14 megapixels. The battery provides 8 to 10 minutes of flight time and about 100 meters of range. Capable of performing 360-degree flips, the F2C is a spry flier with colorful running lights and big dreams.

This is truly everything I would hope for in a drone: easy to operate, very durable, loaded with neat little functions, accompanied by an easy-to-follow manual...

The drone works perfectly. The battery only lasts 8 minutes, so it is almost essential to purchase alternative batteries. Perfect value!
