Editorial Review

The conundrum of social media is that it is inherently anti-social. WiFi, Bluetooth connectivity, iOS and Android are all ways of staying in touch with those we don’t touch. Because our devices are closer, more convenient, smarter and sexier, we touch them instead. Telepresence is another layer of contact-separation and this is one that can actually follow you around. In the workplace, telepresence is touted as the economical alternative to travel and accommodations. Annoying coworkers or business associates can be kept at a safe and manageable distance, where they can talk to the screen instead of gouging the bottom line.

Some, like the stylish Rbot Synergy Swan, are high-functioning and controlled remotely, capable of moving autonomously. The charming, rolling smartphone, the Romo Robotic Pet, is a platform designed for kids to interest them in programming and consumerism. The Revolve Robotics Kubi is a desktop-mounted set of eyes and ears.

Like the Kubi, the Endurance Selfiebot is a stationary telepresence robot. It holds iOS, Android and Windows phones or tablets, and provides about 180 degrees of vertical and horizontal rotation as well as night vision. It will operate for 6 hours off a 2 to 3 hour charge and provides wireless charging of mobile devices. The screen functions autonomously to capture video and audio. This robot can provide sound with the addition of optional speakers. The Follow Me feature enables the Selfiebot to track movement and follow it during calls or while recording. For suggested cooking applications, the monitor will stay focused on the cook, who can use it for reading recipes without all that obnoxious head turning. Or for real good cooks, it can be used for watching movies while heating those gourmet corndogs. As for filming, the Selfiebot lives up to its name by panning and tilting to keep the subject framed and fabulous. The Selfiebot can also be used for in-home surveillance to maintain a robotic eye on those pesky spawn remotely. You can yell at them to “Knock it off!” and not even have to enter the room. Remote parenting -- the American dream.
