Editorial Review

Ecobee has been one of the most successful proponents of the revolution in HVAC control brought about by the Nest Learning Thermostat, not just in terms of functionality but in terms of style. Each new generation of Ecobee thermostats is at least as good looking as the previous iteration, and they're as much an interior design choice for consumers as a way of keeping homes comfortable with efficiency and ease. One can readily imagine that half a century from now an Ecobee thermostat will hang on the wall of the Smithsonian Museum of American History next to the Nest as an example of the early 21st century trend toward form following function and then exceeding it, a trend inspired by Steve Jobs when he insisted that the iPhone be not just easy to use but also easy to look at, the kind of thing you pull out of your pocket as a style accessory, much like you might unveil the ornate locket handed down in your family since your great-great-grandmother was young and hip to the trends of her era.

The fourth generation Ecobee comes with the Alexa Voice Service built in, so you don't even need an Amazon Echo to ask it to set the temperature. And if you don't want to talk to your thermostat, the Ecobee has an app for iOS and Android that will let you set the temperature, as well as create schedules for those times when HVAC will be needed and exceptions for times when less would be more. You can generate energy reports to see how much you are (or aren't) saving and get "insight[s] into your heating and cooling equipment." (Exactly what kind of insights isn't clear.)

The unit runs off house current, not batteries, with the advantages and disadvantages that implies. For the technically minded, the manufacturer supplies a list of requirements to determine if your HVAC wiring is compatible. For similar products, see the Honeywell Lyric 2nd Generation, the Momit Smart and Ecobee's own Third Generation Lite.

I bought this product for the voice integration with Alexa. It's actually not very useful as it doesn't hear me... My wife was not impressed with this purchase.

I am very, very happy with my Ecobee4! It functions just like the Ecobee3 does, but with some very nice and welcomed extras. Overall it's a fantastic product.

The Ecobee4's most useful feature is its remote sensor, which helps ensure that every room in your house is at the right temperature.

Whether you have low or high expectations, you won’t be disappointed. It’s the most customizable option on the market, and it’s certainly the best performing.
