Editorial Review

On the top end of the UAV spectrum the bigger, badder, FAA-registered aircraft are highly focused on stable performance, camera package and payload capacity. For example, the Walkera QR X900 boasts an impressive 22-pound payload and comes with a professional camera rig to boot. In the UAV middle-range, payload is less an issue with performance and speed driving the primary interest. The Furious 320, also by Walkera, suggests that 75 mph speeds are not only attainable but sustainable, one pretty useless without the other especially when it comes to bigger ticket hobby-hoverers. On the economy end, Micro-Air-Vehicles keep getting smaller and less expensive as the expanding technology offers further amazing things in the tiniest of packages.

For the price of a decent lunch or movie, the Eachine H8 Mini offers quite a bit of quad for very little. While no insect-like Proto X Nano-Copter, the Eachine H8 Mini is still small enough to launch from or land on your hand. An unassuming and durable MAV, the Mini is quite the performance demon. With a 6-axis gyro, the H8 Mini flies with remarkable agility and stability, offering about 6 minutes flight time between battery charges.

The H8 comes equipped with headless mode which keeps the controller orientation with the operator, and is not based on the direction the quad is facing. H8 Mini’s transmitter is a small video game-style joysticks-controller which provides surprising maneuverability and precision in flight. Spins, flips, and rolls are accomplished with very remarkable control from such an inauspicious controller and multi-colored LEDs illuminate it while it buzzes about. The little scrapper even has a drone-home feature.

This is not a starter quad. It flies very fast. It easily can go out of your field of view. Even though it crashed from a very high distance, it still kept working.

One of the coolest micro-planes to hit the market. The Eachine H8 Mini performs nearly all the wireless planes and copters I have had the pleasure of playing around with.
