Editorial Review

An aging global population means that more people will be dependent on more machines to help them do the things which were done by fewer machines in the past. For those who still retain a level of functional mobility, there are lots of electric mobility scooters to get them to their destination and aid them around the home as well. One company that consistently puts out affordable, high quality e-scooters is Drive DeVilbiss. Among its various offerings are the cheerfully named Bobcat, Phoenix and Spitfire lines.

The Spitfire Scout 3 Wheel Travel Power Scooter is the 3-wheeled version of the Drive Medical Spitfire Scout 4 and is not dissimilar to the Drive Medical Spitfire 1320 EX. The Scout 3 has a 45.5-inch turning radius for nimble indoor maneuvering. It has a sedate 4.25-mph top speed and a 9-mile maximum range, provided by a pair of 12V batteries and a 24V/270W motor. Its angle-adjustable, delta-style tiller lets the rider position the controller according to his or her need, and is ideal for those of limited strength or dexterity. Anti-tip wheels with 8-inch, non-marking, flat-free tires propel the Scout 3 and support up to 300 lbs. of Scout Master.

This mobility scooter features a quick-connect battery pack that can be charged off-board as well as a height-adjustable seat with a flip back and adjustable-width arms. It also includes a free-wheel release knob, a rear reflector for better visibility, a front basket with carry handle, 2 sets of interchangeable color-through panels in red and blue, and black wheel rims. Its climbing angle is a decent 6 degrees but its ground clearance is only 2.5 inches. The entire unit weighs just 85 lbs., so it's lighter than even the 1320 EX. When it comes to affordability, portability, ease of use, comfort and safety, Drive has once again outdone itself with another highly rated vehicle.

I am really pleased with my sfscout3. It is very sturdily built and has plenty of speed and power. It is somewhat larger than I expected but it's very maneuverable.

It runs great! I wanted something that was light enough for my husband and another person could manage. This scooter seems to be exactly what I needed.
