Editorial Review

The latest trend in high-tech tooth care is neither the rapid oscillations of a conventional electric toothbrush or the intense jets of water from an oral irrigator but tooth-irradiating beams of light. The Pro-Medic Ultrasonic uses an invisible beam of infrared inside your mouth to kill germs plus an LED that produces tooth-whitening visible light to whiten teeth. Not to be outdone in creative use of electromagnetic radiation, the Pursonic S452BR takes the only part of the light spectrum left, ultraviolet, to sanitize the toothbrush itself after it's been immersed in your oral bacteria. Next year look for toothbrushes that use X-rays, gamma rays and microwaves to remove those annoying kernels of popcorn that get stuck between your molars (patent almost certainly pending).

Infrared cleansing aside, the S462BR is a standard sonic toothbrush that uses 45,000 pulsations a second to remove plaque and massage your gums. (There are also 30,000 and 40,000 stroke modes if your teeth need gentler care.) The unit comes with two brushes handles and a recharging unit that can hold both of them simultaneously, with the UV bulb in a small dome between them. Snap the brushes into the cleaner for ten minutes to get the germicidal effect. The complete package comes with 12 heads, so once either the bristles wear out or the bacteria finally evolve resistance to UV light, you can swap out the existing pairs, which should give you a lot of tooth cleansing for your buck.

And if you don't feel you need two brush handles and an ultraviolet cleaner, there are more conventional alternatives on the market, including the Philips Sonicare Plaque Control, the Brio Smartclean Sonic Toothbrush and the Waterpik Complete Care WP-900.

Only good for one year... We had this and then it just stopped working. Brushes would not charge anymore.

So glad I was able to jump on this deal. Does a great job. It's also very quiet. Does take some getting used to as the first few times it really tickled my gums and nose.

The Pursonic just vibrates at a high speed which is different to get used to. Our teeth do feel cleaner though so we know it works well. We're very satisfied with it.
