Editorial Review

Another option in the touch-enablesmart thermostat bunch, the Carrier Infinity uses a simple touchscreen on the wall unit and works with Android and Ios devices for wireless control. You can program heating and cooling sequences for up to 8 different zones, allowing for everyone in the family to get comfortable at their own discretion. The innovative smartphone connectivity feature allows the Infinity to alert you when a filter gets dirty and needs to be cleaned or replaced.

Weather information from the Internet is available on the unit to help suggest your near-term heating and cooling needs. You can upload photos to use as personal wallpaper on the full-color display. Be warned, though, that user reviews for the Infinity aren't terribly good, so you might check out alternative models like the Trane ComfortLink II XL950 or the Ecobee Ecobee3 1st Generation before making a purchasing decision.

Fire was the second great human invention, dating back roughly 2.3 million years. In the history of invention it's beaten out only by stone tools, the earliest extant examples of which date back another 300,000 years. Of course, fire existed before our Homo habilis ancestors got into the act, but it was their ability to control fire that made the difference. Fire had previously burned wild when dry brush was ignited by lightning or volcanic lava edged too close to forests. But it was the control of fire that made it a useful form of technology. Controlled fire allowed us to cook our food -- and to heat our living spaces on chilly nights.

With all due respect to Homo habilis, we're still perfecting the control of fire (or equivalent heating systems) in our homes and workplaces today. Smart thermostats like the Carrier Infinity Thermostat Touch Control combine our ancient control of fire with far more recent inventions like computers, smartphones and touch screens in order to fine tune our control in ways that would have left our prehistoric ancestors hopelessly baffled.

It was very easy to connect both thermostats to my wifi network. They report cost, kva and gallons of propane for the last two day.

So awesome. I was able to install zoning dampers myself because the touch thermostat conducts the needed pressure testing . Very cool!
