Editorial Review

Someday soon we will all live on two planets, Planet Earth and Planet Apple. On Planet Apple you will compute on a Macintosh, make phone calls on an iPhone, tell time on an Apple Watch and probably ride in an Apple self-driving car, if Google and Tesla don't corner that market first. For now, Apple mostly wants you to upgrade the stuff it already sells, including the headphones, but they've made it clear that these headphones aren't quite like the ones you previously used on Planet Earth.

Beats Electronics LLC, the Apple division formerly known as Beats by Dre, introduced a new line of audio headgear in September 2016. Some of them resemble the headphones Apple sold in August 2016 -- the Beats Solo3 Wireless, for instance, is an updated version of the Solo2 -- but there have been changes made that further disconnect the people who live on Planet Apple from everybody else. For instance, the new headphones no longer have headphone jacks. Neither do the new devices (like the iPhone 7) that they're designed to connect to. It's Bluetooth all the way, plus something exclusively Apple: the W1 chip, which allows the headphones to connect to those devices simply by being waved in their vicinity like a press pass at the Consumer Electronic Show.

The Powerbeats3 Wireless is a more budget-friendly pair of headphones than the high-end Solo3, but they can still run for 12 hours on fully charged batteries and for an hour after a five-minute session with Apple's new Fast Fuel charger. They also resist sweat and water, so you can train your athletic heart out to the playlist of your choice.

If you don't live on Planet Apple, the Powerbeats 3 will still connect with your Bluetooth-enabled device minus the W1 convenience, but if you prefer to remain completely earthbound, consider the Sennheiser PXC 550, though it's hardly budget friendly.
