Editorial Review

The August Smart Lock Pro is almost startling in its visual simplicity. It's circular and silver, with no visible controls and only a cryptic insignia that looks like a crescent moon sticking its tongue out to suggest that it's even functional. The Smart Lock Pro is intended to replace the inner lock of your door, not the outer, so if you rent an apartment and the landlord would prefer you not tamper with the doorknobs, it still provides you with a high-tech way to get in and out of your home. It networks with all the major home-control systems on the market, including Alexa, Apple Homekit and Z-Wave, and you can give it commands via Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant, letting you unlock the door when your kids get home without actually having to stand up and greet them. (If your kids are of a certain age, they probably don't want to be greeted by their parents anyway.)

The unit unlocks your door when it detects your smartphone, so you can glide smoothly toward the kitchen without having to put down your grocery bags. The app keeps an activity log, letting you know whose smartphone has activated it, so you'll know who's stopped by your place even if you aren't home. (This could be useful if your antique silverware starts mysteriously vanishing.) The door will lock automatically when you close the door (though this feature can be turned off) and August's DoorSense technology will alert you if the door is ajar. It will also prevent the lock from activating if the door is open.

August claims that the Smart Lock Pro will install on your door in less than ten minutes with only a screwdriver and that it works with most single-cylinder deadbolts. You can still use your old keys to get in if the exterior lock supports it, but who needs keys when a smartphone in your purse will do the trick? If you want to check out similarly stylish locks, look at the Kwikset Obsidian Keyless Touchscreen, the Schlage Touch, and the August ASL-02, which also features a crescent moon with its tongue sticking out. (August uses this image for the "A" in their name.)

Didn’t integrate the Connect directly into the lock itself. Instead, the Connect device...must still be permanently plugged in to a nearby electrical outlet.
