Editorial Review

Pool cleaning is a nasty, difficult job, tough enough that a lot of people hire cleaners to come scrub out their pools once a week, a bill that can add up quickly. Compared to hiring a pool cleaner to come around on a regular schedule, a robotic pool cleaner is downright cheap, even if you do have to spend all the money up front (or at least put it on your credit account). So let's hear it for the dirty job that automated pool cleaners save us from having to do ourselves -- or to hire somebody else to do it for us.

The Aquabot Pool Rover S2-50 is, all considered, remarkably inexpensive and may pay for itself in a few weeks, even while it puts some professional pool cleaner out of a job. According to the manufacturer, its greatest strength is in doing something we often forget needs to be done, mixing pool cleaning chemicals evenly throughout the pool, which among other things means that you need to add fewer chemicals. So for what Aquabot estimates is about five cents for a two-hour cleaning session, the S2-50 also saves you money on those bottles of chemicals you might have been forgetting to add anyway. In addition, it has pumps that can filter up to 85 gallons of water per minute, keeping the pool cleaner than the chemicals would have on their own.

The S2-50 has a 50-foot cable, so it can clean a fairly large pool, though not as large as cleaners with 60-foot cables (e.g., the Hayward AquaVac 500 or Aquabot's own Breeze 4WD). In addition to its filtration capabilities, it will also clean the sides and bottoms of your pool, so for its surprisingly low price, it's quite a good deal.

User reviews are mixed, though, so if you want to shop around for other cleaners that might cost a little more, look at the Maytronics Dolphin Supreme M5, the Smartpool SmartKleen and the Pentair Kreepy Krauly Prowler 830.

The aquabot S2-50 was amazing, my pool was filthy after sitting all year, water was black ... Aquabot is all that and then some, awesome!

Works great! I no longer vacuum my pool and it is crystal clear constantly. Picks up leaves and everything.

This cleaner picks up everything ... Its hard to believe how much debris gets vacuumed in the bags. I finally found a pool cleaner I'm really happy with.

I bought this pool cleaner to replace a Polaris 360, and it does a great job of cleaning. Was highly disappointed when the hands broke off the second time I lifted it...
