Editorial Review

All thermostats are smart. Even the crudest thermostats have at least the rudimentary intelligence required to measure the temperature and adjust the HVAC accordingly. If cybernetics is the science of regulatory systems then a thermostat is cybernetics in its purest, most basic form.

In order to be called a "smart thermostat," though, a thermostat needs to be smarter than that. At the very least, it needs an interface through which the user can present it with more complex demands, schedules for adjusting the temperature by hour of day and day of the week. A smart thermostat needs to do a lot of the work a human being would do in adjusting the temperature over long periods of time. It doesn't hurt if it comes with a smartphone app and a colorful, attractive display that users can look at while they give it instructions.

The Allure Energy Eversense Thermostat does all that and goes further. It adjusts the temperature based on where you are. If its app detects, via your smartphone's location services, that you've gone outside a preset "proximity zone," it adjusts the temperature accordingly. Why waste energy when you're too far away to enjoy the benefits? Once you reenter this zone, it adjusts the temperature again.

Admittedly, this technology is now several years old and proximity sensing is trickling down to other thermostatsl, some of which have additional features. (For instance, the Honeywell Wifi with Voice Control accepts voice commands.) But the Eversense has other features. It will give you tips on saving energy. It will show you radar maps of the weather.

Unfortunately, just about as many online users hate the Eversense as love it, so before purchasing you might want to investigate the websites listed on this page to find what people think of it. There's no question that the Eversense is smart, but nobody wants a thermostat that's too smart for its own good.
