Editorial Review

The All-Clad Prep & Cook is a food processor that looks like a Star Wars droid (or maybe a Stormtrooper) and has a price tag that many buyers may consider astronomical. For the money, though, it offers a galaxy's worth of food preparation styles. Like something out of a late-night infomercial from the 70s or 80s, it "cooks, slow cooks, steams, stirs, stir fries, mixes, kneads, and whips" -- you can almost hear a fast-talking showman rattling off its list of functions and then a polite announcer asking for your credit card number. (Today that ad would probably be on the Home Shopping Network and would last for three hours while carefully screened callers gush about how thrilling it is.)

What makes the Prep & Cook robotic is that it comes with built-in programs for making sauce, soup, pastries, desserts and steaming and simmering anything you need steamed or simmered. Put the food in, push a button, and the Prep & Cook goes to work. So that you don't feel like you've been completely excluded from the cooking process, the unit will happily allow you to specify the cooking temperature (from 90°F to 270°F) and the time (up to two hours) for your meal prep. You can also set it to 12 different speeds, with Pulse and Turbo options, to give your sauce the thorough stirring it deserves.

The unit comes packaged with a display case that holds four different tools -- a whisk, a mixer, a kneading/crushing blade and an ultra-blade knife, which sounds like a weapon from a Japanese role-playing game. There's a separate steaming basket and a recipe book that will show you 300 different ways you can use this thing, in case you're stumped for ideas of your own. All-Clad says that they're building on four decades of experience in metal craftsmanship, most of which probably didn't involve robotics, but it sounds like you can be assured that at least the metal parts are going to be worth the unit's high price.
