Editorial Review

The scooter has come quite a long way since its early days as a simple machine operated by an even simpler kick-push mechanism. Now, these electrically powered bad boys are ripping it up from the city to the suburbs, serving trendy commuters and the cool kid on the block alike. The Airwheel Z5 positions itself firmly as for the former customer, with its mature design and feature set driving this point home with gusto.

With a more elegant, simplified look than the comparatively gaudy adornments of children's scooters, the first impression gives an immediate clue as to who this scooter is designed for. The 12 mile-per-hour top speed makes the Z5 fast enough to make sense for a commute, but slow enough to be fairly unobtrusive on a sidewalk. The tri-folding capacity, collapsing at two joints, makes the Z5 easy to carry with one hand, and the battery recharge time is a stunningly quick two hours — so you can zip to work or school, throw the folded scooter under your arm, plug it in upon arrival, and there you have your eco-friendly, energy efficient commute.

If the horrors of traffic in urban roadways aren't enough to convince you to switch to a more convenient mode of transport, perhaps reducing your personal carbon footprint will be a more effective motivator. One measure puts Americans as having the highest carbon footprint per person per year, with each individual releasing a stunning 18.6 tons of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. So for the sake of our collective future, go green and scoot to work.

Good value for money. Some screws to be tightened at the handlebar during commissioning. Autonomy announced debatable. Satisfied overall!
