Ready or not, we're entering the age of the electric vehicle (EV). The climate is changing, fossil fuels are becoming more difficult to extract from the ground (even using environmentally destructive methods) and every carbon-based molecule your exhaust pipe emits is making the situation worse by filling the atmosphere with heat-catching greenhouse gases. So if you've bought an EV, good work. You're becoming part of the solution and ceasing to be part of the problem. (Disclaimer: The electricity for charging batteries is only as clean as the source that produces it. Oil and coal burning electric plants are still part of the problem and your EV just pushes it back a step, but it's a problem that will have to be solved one step at a time.)
If you have an EV, you may be shopping for a charger. The tongue-twistingly named AeroVironment TurboCord Dual Plug-in, which will run off a 120V or 240V plug, may be what you need. It's tiny (the manufacturer likes to say that it will fit in the palm of your hand) and weatherproof, so you don't need a garage to protect it from the elements. AeroVironment claims that it's the "only UL listed dual-voltage plug-in charger on the market," so if you're not sure what voltage socket you'll be plugging it into, it's got you covered for both common types.
The TurboCord is for less advanced batteries like the one in the Nissan LEAF. If you've got a more expensive and powerful EV, like some of the recent Tesla models, it's not going to keep up with the battery's acceptance rate. That doesn't mean it won't work. It just means you'll be losing the charging speed that a more powerful charger like the Electric Motor Werks JuiceBox Pro could give you. But if you don't need or can't use that fast a charger, the TurboCord should fit the bill. Also look at the Schneider Electric EVLink Wallbox and the ClipperCreek LCS-20.
Performs just as advertised. The unit is truly light weight and easy to use. Real nice unit. Does the job!
We were so excited to get this product and have been sorely disappointed. The first cord lasted three months, stopped working and was returned.
Works well. It's small, portable and sturdy. High recommend considering this as opposed to bulky permanent chargers.
If you like the idea of being able to take your own personal charging station with you anywhere you go... then TurboCord by AeroVironment is the right choice for you.
