The AcuRite 00589 weather station is pretty much like all the other AcuRite weather stations in that it comes packaged with their standard color indoor display and an outdoor weather monitor. Where it differs is that the outdoor weather monitor it offers is precisely in the midrange between their full-featured 5-in-1 monitor, which measures temperature, humidity, rainfall and wind direction/speed, and their low-end outdoor thermometer/hygrometer combo that only measures the temperature and humidity. The included 3-in-1 monitor that comes with the 00589 does the temperature and humidity thing too, but it can measure wind speed as well. So if you need wind speed but don't need wind direction or rainfall amount, this is the AcuRite weather station package for you. Got that? Good.
The AcuRite ecosystem of weather stations has grown so complicated yet precisely targeted that anyone from a casual weather observer to an impassioned follower of all things meteorological can find a package somewhere in their catalog that fits their needs precisely. And if you can't find it in their catalog, AcuRite systems are so modular -- the indoor display and array of outdoor monitors can also be purchased separately -- you can probably put the ideal system together piece by piece yourself. Or you can start with a small system -- say, just the indoor display, which can measure indoor temperature, humidity and barometric pressure on its own -- and let it grow like a runaway vine, adding on sensors as needed or upgrading on whim (or cash flow) when you want to improve what you have. AcuRite products could easily become an obsession as a casual rainy-day cloud of interest grows into a full-blown hurricane of a weather-forecasting hobby.
If you've already passed into that final stage, though, you could go directly to something higher end, from AcuRite's fully decked out AcuRite 01085RM to the ultra-pricey Davis Instruments Vantage Pro2 or the ultra-stylish (but less expensive) Netatmo NWS01-US.
Setup was very easy- it connected with the outdoor unit within seconds. I recommend this to anyone who wants a quality and good looking screen for their weather station.
I like the fact that the viewing monitor uses electricity while it has battery backup if the power goes out at home. Display has low, medium, bright, and auto dim.
Very fun item to track the weather and especially the wind when a storm rolls through. Very easy setup and accurate.
