Editorial Review

What precisely is a geofence? Think of it as a virtual border that, despite having no physical existence, is acknowledged by certain electronic devices based on GPS signals. In the case of the geofence used by the Lux Products GEO-BL, the geofence surrounds you, the user. More properly, the "fence" is generated by the smartphone app supplied with the product and can be set to a certain radius around your smartphone, so that the GEO-BL will know if you're home or close enough to home that you'll want your living space heated or cooled. (You can switch off the geofencing option if you want your house to remain temperature controlled when you're away -- if other residents are going to be home, for instance, and they don't have their own geofences.)

This is a clever feature, but other smart thermostats, like the Nest Learning 3rd Generation and the Honeywell Lyric 2nd Generation also know when you're home, so this doesn't make the GEO-BL unique. What other tricks does the GEO-BL have up its metaphorical sleeve, then? It can be programmed, with the aid of its smartphone app or the wall unit itself, for a 7-day schedule of temperature changes. It uses a wheel control similar to early iPods to select from programming menus, which at least makes the wall unit a bit different from the typical button-operated models. The wall unit is fairly attractive, but it lacks the visual flair of the Nest or the Zen.

When it comes down to it, though, the GEO-BL doesn't offer any features that can't be found elsewhere, the geofencing included. User reviews are good enough to suggest that it works as advertised, though, so if you can find a new or used model at a better price than the competition, there's no reason that you should hesitate to buy it.

Just received mine today and installed it right away. Very easy to install for a female who is not an electrician. It is working very well and I loved the online setup.
